Teachers unhappy with new DPS contract

Last week Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb and Detroit Federation of Teachers President Keith Johnson announced a tentative deal that was to improve accountability and avoid bankruptcy for the district.

Unfortunately, it looks like the deal may not go through, reports Detroit Free Press:

In a heated union meeting at Cobo Hall on Sunday, many teachers vowed to vote against the agreement. No one spoke in support of a strike -- such as the one that lasted 16 days in 2006 after teachers verbally rejected a contract proposal -- but there was clear opposition to the notion of loaning the district money in the short term from paychecks.

Union members will vote on the contract by secret ballot this month.

For the sake of DPS students, let's hope there isn't a strike, and that mass layoffs don't need to be made.
