Take action to help Detroit kids
Detroit Public Schools' appalling NAEP scores are making national headlines. Besides giving our own kids what they need to succeed in school, how can the city's parents improve the lives of all Detroit students? You can volunteer and advocate:
- Volunteer for the new DPS Reading Corps. At the Detroit Parent Network Annual Breakfast on Saturday, DPS emergency financial manager Robert Bobb announced the creation of a new volunteer initiative to create a 'reading revolution' among DPS students - the DPS Reading Corps. You can sign up for the Corps at any time commitment through the DPS website.
- Tell your state lawmakers to pass Race to the Top reforms. The Obama Administration announced the Race to the Top program, granting millions of dollars in funding to states that implement outcome-based teacher evaluation, allow more charter schools, create takeover programs for failing schools, and begin alternative teacher certification. Bills in the Michigan legislature will make these changes and qualify the state as much as $400 million in Federal funding for schools. Find your state Representative and Senator online and tell them to pass these bills for the good of Michigan's children.
DPN parents create solutions to tough parenting problems at home every day. We can be a part of the solution for all of Detroit's kids - volunteer and tell leaders to LISTEN UP!
