Parents, Bobb address NAEP scores at DPN Annual Breakfast

At DPN's annual breakfast on Saturday, over 500 members met with Detroit Public Schools emergency financial manager Robert Bobb and voiced concerns about DPS' worst-in-the-nation NAEP math scores. Bobb pointed out that the low scores are the result of community factors as well as issues in the school system, including unsafe neighborhoods. Bobb is right - to improve performance in school, kids need to feel safe and parents need the resources necessary to prepare them for the classroom. These are issues many parents expressed concern about in creating The Agenda for Detroit Kids.DPN executive director Sharlonda Buckman said,

"This crisis is too big for anyone to stay on the sidelines. Detroit parents must provide strong leadership at home and DPS, City Hall, Lansing, and Washington must enact radical, transformative changes to meet our children’s education needs."

The meeting was covered by many media outlets, including Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, MLive.com, Associated Press, UPI, MyFox, WDIV, and All Headline News.
