Michigan misses out on Race to the Top Funding
Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the finalists for the Obama Adminsitration's $400 in education funding - unfortunately Michigan did not make the cut, despite making a number of reforms to qualify. The finalists include Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Tennessee. Winners are announced in April.
As to possible reasons why Michigan didn't make it, Todd Heywood at Michigan Messenger wonders if it was recent statewide cuts in education funding and a lack of anti-bullying legislation - a policy favored by Secreatary Duncan.
Despite the loss, in the race to qualify for the funding, Lansing made many school reforms that will have lasting effects.
