City elections are today, and Detroit Parent Network is hitting the streets to make sure people have the information they need to make good civic decisions for their children.

Detroit Free Press highlighted DPN's work in their feature article about activities at the polls:

Late Monday, Sharlonda Buckman of the Detroit Parent Network and other activists to finalize logistics and distribute literature to volunteers.

And Buckman rose at 4:30 a.m. today “ready to check out a few polls and do what I can.”

“It’s an exciting day for us,” she said mid-morning, as she also juggled ringing cell phones and volunteers who were working phone banks or handing out literature at the polls.

Buckman said she was targeting voters today who earlier had told Network volunteers that they were undecided on Proposal S.

Those voters’ questions have been very specific, she said: “People still want to clarify the percent of interest we’d have to pay and how much we‘re going to have to pay right now,” she said.

Most of the feedback, she said, has been supportive. However, “we’ve had a few people - and it was a very few - that said ‘You know, I’m just done with Detroit.’’ ”

Others, she said, told her they weren’t going to bother to vote.

“I called those people back and said, look if you don’t vote, you have voted,” she said.
