Detroit poetry program recognized by White House
Two Detroit teens accepted a national arts award last week at the White House from First Lady Michelle Obama last week for their poetry. They were accepting the award on behalf of InsideOut Literary Arts Project, which works to bring creative writing programs to Detroit students.
But as Desiree Cooper points out on her Detroit Diary blog, DPS may not fund the nationally-recognized program this year.
This is the kind of program that keeps kids excited about school and gives them a constructive outlet for their emotions - exactly what DPN is advocating for with its Agenda for Detroit Kids.
Mayor Bing and DPS officials should find a way to keep exemplary programs like this in our children's classrooms. In the mean time, here is a list of ways you can help InsideOut keep up the great work.
