Agenda items in the news
With the release of DPS' dismal NAEP scores and the flurry of answers and initiatives to address the crisis, DPN has been focusing a lot on schools. A couple items in the news recently are good reminders that our children's success is affected by more than just education policy.
Parents told us SAFE COMMUNITIES are a top concern for them, and that tearing down abandoned and burned out buildings would go a long way towards creating them. In an editorial yesterday, Detroit Free Press highlighted efforts to better facilitate this process in the city through a reorganization of the agencies and laws that guide it. The community group Motor City Blight Busters supports the plan.
To create FAMILY FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOODS, parents in our survey suggested more entertainment options in the city. WDET-FM announced that it will support small neighborhood arts and culture organizations through free promotion as part of its new 'STAR' program. Tune in to WDET-FM and check out its Arts & Culture Calendar for entertainment opportunities for you and your family in the city.
And because we all must work together to create BETTER SCHOOLS, please check out this Detroit News editorial about the next step in ratifying the Race to the Top funding, which requires school officials to sign up their districts before this Thursday. Contact your school leaders and tell them your children and Detroit need this funding:
